Official name: Butterbur 

Latin name: Petasites Hybridus 

Description: Butterbur is a perennial plant with a fleshy rhizome from the Compositae family. It grows in stony and moist places near rivers, streams and places with an altitude of up to 1000 - 1500 m. The flower stem is up to 80 cm. high. The leaves develop after flowering. The leaves of Petasites are very large, kidney-shaped or heart-shaped, thick, unevenly toothed, smooth and green above, downy and light gray below. The petioles are double-edged and hollow. The flowers are reddish, dioecious, arranged in medium-sized baskets, forming racemes that bloom in April and May.   

Part of the herb used: Leaves (Folia Petasites) and rhizomes (Rhizoma et radix Petasites) 

Time of collection: The leaves of the plant are collected after flowering, and the rhizomes - at the end of the growing season in August - September. The roots and rhizomes are dug up in late summer and early autumn, cleaned of the aerial parts, washed and left to dry. Ready quantities are dried quickly in well-ventilated rooms or in a dryer at a temperature of up to 45°. 

Chemical composition/Contents and properties: Butterbur contains an essential oil rich in sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene lactones, petazine and isopetazine. The leaves of the medicinal plant also contain tannins, and the roots contain inulin.  

Medicinal action and application: Petasites has antispasmodic, anti-clotting, anti-spastic and anti-inflammatory effects. It is used for fever, shortness of breath, gout and epilepsy. Horsetail extract is an effective and safe therapy for asthma, in the treatment of hay fever or seasonal allergies causing sneezing, itching, watery eyes. Externally, butterbur is applied to facilitate the healing of closed wounds and burns. The plant relieves migraine attacks. It contains the compound kaempferol, which prevents oxidative damage to the brain and may have a positive effect on heart health. It is a powerful herb and should be taken carefully only with a doctor's prescription and under medical supervision!
