Latin name: Galiu aparine L.

Description: Gallium (Galium aparine L.) is a perennial creeping herbaceous plant of the Broshovi family (Rubiaceae) with a height of 30 to 120 cm. It is found throughout Bulgaria in bushes, along roads, fences, fields, crops and places at altitude up to 1500m. The stem of the plant is prostrate or semi-erect, ridged, covered on the surface with downward-facing hooks. The leaves are spine-shaped, linear-lanceolate, pointed, strongly rough with a spike at the end. The flowers are small, whitish or white, collected in umbels, with 4 stamens without a calyx.

Harvest time: The stalks are harvested in May and June during flowering. The collected material is dried in the shade in dry and ventilated rooms.

Chemical composition/Content and properties: The chemical composition of the medicinal plant includes various compounds such as saponins, tannins, vit. C, citric acid, red dye, glycosides and flavonoids, alkaloids such as caffeine, phenolic acids, anthraquinone derivatives.

Medicinal action and application: In the fresh state and in the form of juice, the Cleavers helps with problems with the lymphatic system by stimulating the removal of toxins from the body. Poultices of the herb can be applied to enlarged and swollen lymph nodes. It is also used for ear infections, tonsillitis, upper respiratory tract infections. Sticks of glue have an analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, disinfecting and diuretic effect. The medicinal plant helps with sand in the kidneys and bladder because it increases the flow of urine, soothes the urinary tract and reduces inflammation. Externally, in the form of poultices and compresses, the herb is applied to skin problems such as psoriasis, boils, wounds, eczema, dermatitis, acne and injuries of various origins.
