SWEET BASIL (OCIMUM BASILICUM)

Basil, known also as „king’s herb“(from gr. "basilicum —" king’s)
As an herb and spice there are used the over-ground parts of the plant, for fresh spice the basil is collected in the blooming period, for drying the basil is collected after the blooming. The basil contains essential oil, bitter substance, glycosides, tannins, organic acids, mineral salts.
Ingredients: The basil includes about 1.5% essential oil, highly varied in its constituents. There are known a few types of essential oil – with content of linalool and methylhavicol or with camphor and α-pinene or eugenol etc. There are found in the drug saponins, tannins, organic acids, flavonoids etc.

Attention: In bigger quantities the basil is toxicant!
The basil possesses antiseptic, anti-spasmolytic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and light tensing effect. It is applied by infectious-inflammatory processes of the uric-genital tract and respiratory tract, by fatigue and depression. Taken in big doses it is toxicant! Outwardly the basil is used for applying of skin rashes and tumefactions. Excellent preventive remedy against gnats - a pot with basil or a bunch of basil hanged on the window will prevent your house for a long time from the annoying pests.
In Traditional Native Bulgarian Medicine a juice of fresh basil leaves helps by festering inflammations of the mammalian ear, as also by hardly healing wounds.
The basil is used as a diuretic remedy, by colitis, as gargle by gums troubles and by rhinitis. By hardly healing wounds the fresh leaves or the essential oil of the basil are applied outwardly in form of foments and ointments.
