Latin name: Verbascum Thapsus L.

Description: Муллеин is a two-year herbaceous-fibrous plant from the family Scrophulariaceae (Scrophulariaceae). In Bulgaria, it is found mainly in dry grassy uncultivated places, near bushes, on sandy and stony slopes with an altitude of up to 2000 m. In the first year, only a rosette of leaves develops from the seed, and in the second - a stem densely covered with trichomes, leaves and flowers . The root is highly branched. The stem is up to 2 m. high, unbranched or slightly branched at the top. Leaves are alternate, covered with multicellular trichomes. The flowers are large, golden yellow, with smaller corolla sizes, collected at the top of the stem in a multi-colored and elongated grape-like inflorescence. Flowering starts from the top down. Calyx and corolla are 5-part. The corolla is large, golden yellow. The fruit is a multi-seeded box, bursting at 2 seams. The medicinal plant blooms in summer from June to September, and the seeds ripen from August to October.

Harvest time: Petals without calyxes are handpicked on dry days during flowering in June - August. Leaves are also handpicked in May – September.

Chemical composition/Content and properties: flavonoids, mucilage substances, saponins, essential oil, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, fatty acids, coumarins, glucosides, etc.

Medicinal effect and application: Mullein has an expectorant, softening, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. In medicine, the plant is used as an emollient on the respiratory organs for colds, coughs, whooping cough, bronchial spasms, bronchial asthma, catarrh, etc. The expectorant effect is due to the presence of saponins and mucous substances in the mullein. It is used in gastrointestinal diseases, diarrhoea, in diseases of the liver and bile. Externally, the medicinal plant is used for gargling with angina, for compresses with hemorrhoids.
