Latin name: Geranium Sanguineum
Description: Bloody Cranesbill is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Geraniaceae family with a highly developed rhizome and a densely hairy stem branching from the base. It grows all over Bulgaria in dry, grassy, stony and forested places. The leaves are fragrant, globose, grooved, opposite to the positive and turn red in autumn. The flowers are single, located on a long stalk with five petals in red-purple color. The entire medicinal plant is covered with white hairs and flowers during the months of June and August.

Harvest time: The roots of blood geranium are harvested from August to October after the fruits have broken down, after the seeds have ripened and after the aerial parts have wilted. They are cleaned from the above-ground parts, washed and dried in ventilated rooms or in a dryer at a temperature of up to 40°.
Chemical composition/Contents and properties: bloody cranesbill contains tannins, essential oil (with geramycin), flavonoids, curcumin, borneol, alcohols, ketones, antioxidant rutin. The leaves of the herb contain vitamin C and provitamin A.
Medicinal effect and application: Thanks to its rich chemical composition, blood geranium has an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, immunostimulating, hemostatic, antipyretic effect. Bloody Cranesbill is used for skin inflammations, hemorrhoids, ischemia, high blood pressure, fungal infections, bleeding gums, tonsillitis, toothache, etc. Blood geranium essential oil is used in perfumery and aromatherapy, helps with mental fatigue, gives energy and tone to the body and spirit. It is also used for inhalations in lung diseases. Externally, blood geranium is applied in the form of compresses for fistulas and any inflammation.
