Description: Canary grass is a heat-loving plant of the family. Poaceae. Phalaris canariensis, better known as canary grass, is an annual plant cultivated as a secondary cereal that is grown as food for certain songbirds. Canary grass germinates 3 to 5 months after sowing. This grass has a fibrous root and forms a bare stem reaching up to 70 cm in height. The leaves of the plant are rough, elongated, and the upper leaf has a bulging shell. Flowering occurs from May to July depending on the climate and lasts about 3 months. The inflorescence is short, oval to oblong, very dense panicle of whitish-green color. It has decorative, striped, lanceolate and pointed scales. At the base of the scales there are small oval, flat, shiny, golden to brownish seeds. Pollination is carried out by the wind.
Part of the herb used: canary seeds that are used as food for canaries and other songbirds. The seeds are glossy brown. It should be stored in a dry place and away from parasites. In industry, flour made from seeds is used in the production of fine cotton products and silk products.
