Latin name: Melilotus officinalis Pall. (Trifolium melilotus officinalis)
Other names: sweet yellow clover, yellow melilot, ribbed melilot and common melilot.
Description: Yellow Melilot is a biennial honey plant of the family S. Leguminosae (Fabaceae) with an upright ascending, up to 1 m high. It grows in moist grassy places, like weeds in crops, along roads and abandoned places. The Yellow Melilot is found throughout the country in places with an altitude of up to 800 m. The leaves of the herb are triple, consecutive, obovate, unevenly sharply toothed, at the top with a sill. The flowers are collected in elongated racemose inflorescences in the axils of the upper leaves. The corolla of the medicinal plant is yellow, consisting of 5 unequal petals. The fruit is an ovoid, rough single bean seed. The herb blooms from June to September. The seeds ripen in August.

Harvest time: The harvest of Melilotus officinalis is harvested from May to August by cutting off the flowering top stem parts (15-20 cm long) and drying them in a ventilated and shady place.
Chemical composition/Content and properties: The chemical composition of Melilotus officinalis includes coumarin glucosides, from which about 1% coumarin, 0.2% melilothine, resins, mucilages and tannins are obtained during hydrolysis. The herb is rich in triterpene sapogenins, flavonoids and heterosides, the main of which is melilotoside.
Healing action and application: Melilotus officinalis increases lymphatic and venous flow, reduces capillary wall permeability, improves blood vessel tone and accelerates the dissipation of hematomas. The herb has a strong diuretic effect. It is used in the treatment of varicose veins and hemorrhoids - externally and internally, in the treatment of gastric inflammation and intestinal ulcers, flatulence and intestinal disorders, as well as in the treatment of insomnia, nervous tension, neuralgia, etc.
Preparations of Melilotus officinalis are contraindicated during pregnancy. An overdose of the plant can cause headaches, nausea and vomiting.
